about
November 18, 2022 – Mxrcxl, the alternative rock group founded by musician and songwriter Marcel Janssen, releases a new single titled “A House on a Dead End Street”. The song is partly inspired by the book 'For a truly successful life’ by Dutch philosopher Bas Haring.
According to Janssen, “A House on a Dead End Street” treads the thin line between doubt and fear, the doing and not doing, and the ambivalence of not wanting to draw too much attention to oneself. “It's a song that asks more questions than it answers. Does striving for success make you a better, happier person? Aren't the periods when I don't make music, and pursue nothing, actually better times? Would it make me lazy if I chose to pursue nothing? What would that bring me? I want to make the music, but I might as well destroy it when it's finished because there's too much of it anyway and I don't need all the confirmation."
In conjunction with this very thought, “A House On Dead End Street'' sounds a lot more gritty and frayed than previous albums In Alarm and All About Tomorrow. It gives listeners a hint of Mxrcxl’s forthcoming third album, which will be released in 2023. This collection of songs largely originated from live sessions with the band, giving the music an impulsive, naive energy. For the mixing and mastering, Janssen once again approached a luminary from Seattle: in the hands of Jack Endino – guitarist of grunge pioneers Skin Yard – the music’s soaring abandon was candidly captured.
On the new record, Mxrcxl has unburdened a lot of lingering obstacles from the past. The songs still latch on the heavy themes with lightning rod-intensity, but no longer feel grounded by their weight. The sharp edges have been removed, the imperfections and idiosyncrasies given plenty of space, thus imbibing the music with an unmistakable character. Mxrcxl has now collected the necessary oxygen in its lungs to set the circuit ablaze.
lyrics
On the fence
Just sitting here
High on doubt
Higher on fear
If I show it it’s yours
If I hide it it’s mine
On the fence
For all my life
There’s always somebody somewhere
Questioning the why of it all
There’s always somebody somewhere
With not a care in the air
On the fence
Just sitting here
High on doubt
Higher on fear
If I show it it’s yours
And out there for good
I know I won’t
But I probably should
We all got many stories not to tell
We all got somewhere else to be
I’ve been around the world and home again
And bought me a house
On a dead end street
